Dear Friends in Christ:
We are about to embark on a journey that continues the vision to grow as we make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. That vision began in our former location at Minnesota Ave. and 22nd St. In the early 60s the church moved to its current location building new in 1964. Twenty years ago, an addition was added that would accommodate a church of 500 members. We are almost there and must move forward into the future. The current project began over three years ago when needs were assessed and plans developed. You have seen the concept that has been proposed. Space will be provided under this plan so that Sunnycrest UMC can continue to be a vital presence in its current location for many years to come.
Our vision to grow provides for a three phase approach as follows:
Phase One: Develop the parking lot so that it accommodates maximum parking. Also, classroom space, worship space, and gathering space (narthex) will be expanded
Phase Two: A multi-purpose room, new kitchen, remodeled office and classroom space would be developed
Phase Three: A new sanctuary that seats upwards of 600 people would be realized
The proposed plan allows for flexibility as well as permanence. It is permanent because we are committed to ministry in this community. It allows flexibility because the additional space allows for outreach and equipping opportunities that will come before us.
So, where are we at this moment? We are ready to raise funds to put Phase One into place. We will soon begin a prayer-based capital stewardship journey to begin to raise those funds. The goal of this journey is 1.3 million dollars. Here are some important dates to put on your calendar now:
Sunday, February 28 – Launch the stewardship journey
Sunday, March 7 and following weeks – sermons, youth, and children involvement as we move forward
Sunday, March 28 – Commitment Sunday
Sunday, April 11 – Stewardship journey result will be announced
Our theme, “A Vision To Grow,” invites us to grow together as we live out what it means to be the body of Christ for the transformation of the world. We ask you to do one thing upon receipt of this letter. Pray, pray, pray! I won’t tell you what to pray for; the Holy Spirit will lead you into that prayer. But, do pray without ceasing. Together in prayer we will boldly step into the future and watch God transform vision into reality.
